About Apple Hostels of Philadelphia

To us, the apple represents the place where you are - the source of knowledge and wisdom. We understand that you've travelled from all corners of the planet seeking new places, new friends, and new adventures. You're not satisfied with simply knowing where you're going or how to get there - you crave an experience informed by newfound sights, sounds, tastes, and ideas. In short, you want to know where you've been.

Apple Hostels was dreamt about for quite some time but finally came together in the spring of 2008 when we purchased the Bank Street Hostel, located in the Old City just steps from Independence Hall, the Liberty Bell and surrounded by great pubs, bars, nightclubs and restaurants. Our goal is to have the best reviewed hostel in North America, so having a great building in the perfect location has gotten us off on the right foot. Now we want to be sure to offer each of our guests a clean and safe environment, the friendliest and most knowledgeable employees, and a great variety of tours and activities.

We hope to get the opportunity to meet you and have you as one of our guests. Please be sure to let us know if there’s anything we can do to make your stay more enjoyable, either by completing one of our surveys or writing directly to one of our staff listed below. We’re looking forward to meeting you!

A little about…

  Mickey

Mickey’s life is a tale of rags to riches. Mickey was abandoned at the USA Hostels Hollywood hostel when he was just 5 months old. As adorable as he was, the staff took him in and quickly trained him to do their jobs. Before he knew it, he was checking in 20 guests at a time, cleaning the toilets and doing the reports. All this while negotiating contracts with the hostel’s vendors. Realizing that he deserved more for all this than just dog food and belly rubs, he set out to create the world’s best hostel.

Marc

Marc has more than 11 years experience in the hostel business. Originally from Montreal, Canada, Marc moved to California in 1998 and joined USA Hostels where he helped grow the company into one of North America's finest chain of hostels. In 2007 he set out with Mickey and Ines to form Apple Hostels, in what they hope will be another success story. At the very least, it should keep them out of trouble for a while.

Marc's interrests include travel, home renovation, hiking and ballroom dancing.

Ines

Ines has travelled all over the world including Europe, India, New Zealand, Africa, and North America. When she was not busy discovering new places she worked as an architect in Berlin, New York and the UK. After meeting Mickey and Marc she decided to settle in the US and to help grow Apple Hostels into one of the best looking hostel chains in the world. Ask her about the awards she has received in innovative shed design.

Dennis

Dennis studied history in college, worked in e-commerce, spent most of last summer conquering Europe, and now decided to take on Apple Hostels. He grew up in a local suburb and was enrolled in two of the area's major universities, so he knows Philly well. He is also very familiar with the discount nightlife, so feel free to ask him where all the cheap places to go out are.

You can email him at dennis@applehostels.com

Shawna

Shawna has traveled throughout the United States and the Caribbean; has flirted with Canada, and recently has turned her interest south of the border. She looks forward greatly to the opportunity to travel to Mexico and even farther. When she is not sailing or exploring the country via bus, she is working toward her degree in filmmaking. Shawna has lived in Philadelphia for the past 8 years, and considers herself an expert in the art of finding the cheap entertainment. Be sure to ask her about Philly favorites like drag shows, drunken spelling bees, and dance parties.

Katreena

Katreena was born and raised in South Philadelphia. She looks forward to one day travelling to Europe, especially Greece. In her spare time she enjoys writing and exploring parts of the city that most don't even think about. Reality Hacking (aka Urban Exploring) and ghost hunting are among her hobbies. She enjoys ghost stories that have to do with the country's founding and hopes to finally get a picture of Ben Franklin's ghost.

Joe

Joe Kane is a native of Philadelphia. He takes loving care of Apple Hostels as their maintenance man or “Mr. Fix It”, as he likes to be referred to. In the past Joe has worked as a Peace Corps volunteer to help build schools in Gabon, Africa; studied French at the Sorbonne in Paris, and has worked in the Salmon Canaries of Alaska. Joe enjoys Sailing, Tennis, Skiing, and writing for fun and profit. He is a volunteer crew member of the Tall Ship Gazela located at Penn's landing in Philadelphia, and encourages you to visit the ship while here in Philadelphia. Joe's future adventures include sailing solo to Hawaii. His favorite places to visit while in Philadelphia are the Bartram Gardens historic home in West Philadelphia along with the Maritime museum at Penn's landing. Oh! He also will be happy to give you pool lessons and a trick shot demonstration on the Apple Hostels pool table - time allowing of course.

Tim

Tim has lived in Philadelphia for the past four years. He also sucks at saving money, so he is the king of having a good time on a budget; whether it is cheap shopping or cheap drinking. As far as his travels, he recently was able to check Paris off his list of destinations to visit but he still has a list of cities and countries he wants to see. In short, for a good time talk to Tim.

Amy

First of all, it's Philly, not Philadelphia! A transplant from the west coast, Amy's addicted to traveling and shifted paradigms. In addition to being a veteran tour guide of the city, she's a magnet for quirky trivia and bizarre stories, so, please, bombard her with your questions! No holds barred! She likes drawing on napkins, tackling Dostoevsky, taking the saltine challenge, and wandering Philly's Magic Garden. Oh, and she's a hopeless francophile.

Ryan

Ryan, a world renowned autobiographer, is one of the newest members to the Apple Hostels family. A Philadelphia native, he enjoys film, traveling, home-brewing, attempting to speak Spanish, playing guitar, and dining at Steve’s Prince of Steaks in the northeast. He absolutely loves to go abroad and has been to Europe, Mexico, and Africa. This year Ryan hopes to go back to Europe, either before or after the Phillies win the World Series…..again.

Eva

Eva, a proud descendant and fluent speaker of the Polish nationality, was born and raised in the humble Port Richmond neighborhood of Philly. She spent a semester abroad in Belgium, where she fell in love with delicious trappist beers while getting the chance to travel all over Europe in the meantime. Having a passion for modern art, Eva hopes to someday work in a museum or gallery. She also enjoys baking, philosophy, photography, and hanging around in coffee shops. Not to mention she’s a self-proclaimed “foodie” as well, so ask her about good eats in Philly.

You can email her at eva@applehostels.com

Jens

Jens, born and raised in Germany, spent most of the last decade traveling all over the world. After having lived in New Zealand and Ireland he came to Philadelphia almost 3 years ago. He loves good vegan food almost as much as traveling. Just ask him about the plentiful vegan options Philadelphia has to offer - from a vegan version of the infamous Philly Cheese Steak to the best Walnut Shrimps, and everything in between.
